Dr. Shepard’s approach to assessment and treatment looks at the whole person, including strengths and weaknesses, as well as familial, cultural, and social factors that influence a person’s functioning. He believes in a strengths-based approach that helps parents formulate the right questions in order to find useful solutions. In therapy, he uses a solution-focused approach with adolescents. Dr. Shepard also provides social skills training from a cognitive-behavioral orientation to address the social competence needs of children and adolescents. As part of treatment, he may suggest that you consult with a physical health care provider regarding somatic treatments that could help your problems and may also suggest that you get involved in a therapy or support group as part of your work with him. You will always have the right to refuse anything that he suggests without being penalized in any way.
